| Carsten Holler |
After his agricultural studies, Carsten Höller had his degree in Biology in the 1993, and at the end of 80s worked in a field that involved art and scientific research. Themes of his projects are the deep feelings, as love, joy in relations to the biological predispositions, as the istinct of procreation. He took part in some important international exhibitions, as in the 1993, in Aperto, during the XLV Venice Biennale, in the 1996 in Manifesto 1, in Rotterdam, in the 1997 in Documenta X in Kassel, in the 1998 in Manifesta 2 in Luxembourg and in Berlin Biennal.
RB-Ride - ArtePollino 2009
RB Ride is a merry-go-round composed by 12 small ships (max 24 persons), with a diameter pedestal/basis of 16,75 m. Its minimum height is 3,50 m, the maximum one is 10,50 m. The merry-go-round is coloured and there are little seats that turn around in a circle and in the same time they tilt towards the ground, it takes a quarte of an hour to have a tour. With this installation the artist contradicts the main function of the merry-go-round and the expectations of the audience, altering the movement of the device: he slows the rotation down in order to avoid the centrifugal strenght, which causes thrill and euphoria and a merely physical perception of the experience. Through the slow rotation, it is caused an effect of instability and restlessness which maybe is bigger than the usual movement of the engine and the spectator has an experience that allows him to observe the sorrounding nature from a very particular point of view. The merry-go-round represents an instrument to recover the value of the time, reflections and contemplation, and it forces the spectator, who lives the experience, to bring into question his way to perceive his reality and certitudes.
